Five area fire departments battled wind chills in the single digits and used more than 80,000 gallons of water to extinguish a barn fire north of Grinnell on Wednesday, Dec. 14.

     It takes training – lots of it – for fire departments to prepare for emergency calls that may come at all hours of the day. And Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department and EMS was preparing for just such an emergency on Wednesday, Nov. 16 when they held vehicle extrication training.

On Dec. 6, members of the Avon Fire Department responded to a car fire at a farm southwest of Avon. The fire was quickly extinguished and nearby structures were not damaged. Submitted by Dennis Dodge, treasurer of the Avon Fire Department.  

Pierre Fire Department crews were busy the last couple weeks of November. A deck fire call came in about 6 a.m. on Nov. 19 at the Edgewater Apartments. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze. Later that same day, they were called to the Americana Apartments for a grease fire in a kitchen.

On Nov. 30, Pierre Fire Department received a call of a garage on fire in the Northstar area of town. When crews arrived on the scene the garage was full engulfed and considered to be a total loss. Firefighters worked to contain the flames and protect nearby homes. There were no injuries reported. Photos by Sue Trujillo.

Avon car fire

On Dec. 6, members of the Avon Fire Department responded to a car fire at a farm southwest of Avon. The fire was quickly extinguished and nearby structures were not damaged.

Yankton fire museum

Yankton firefighters, along with the retired firefighters, gave the department’s two antique trucks a little push to their new home at station #2 on Oct. 3 during the Old Timers Banquet.
