Representatives from eight state fire associations gathered for the annual States Networking meeting in Des Moines on Oct. 29.

     In today’s fire service we rely quite heavily on pre-connected hose lines. Preplanning the typical incidents saves us time when we are in a hurry. There are many situations that will require us to add sections of hose to these pre-connected lines or add additional lines to the truck.

On Oct. 23, members of the Stanton Fire Department responded to a combine fire about three miles east of Stanton. The fire started in the engine compartment. The combine is considered a total loss, but the quick response of firefighters allowed them to save the bean head, and limit spreading into surrounding vegetation.

The Gibbon Fire Department conducted house burn fire training on Oct. 29 with Shelton Fire. Fire Captain Kyle Bond is shown training Fire Cadet Garrett Godberson on nozzle control after interior training was complete and they let the house go. Submitted by Rick Brown, Gibbon Fire Chief.           

     At 8 a.m. on Oct. 28th the Brandon Fire Department was called to a trench collapse at 8 a.m.  A local contractor was in the process of installing an 18-inch sewer line. The line was in a 15-foot deep trench with the side walls of the trench approximately 12 feet wide.

Fire departments from Humboldt, Hartford, Parker, Montrose and Sioux Falls battled a rural house fire south of Humboldt. Crews were called by the homeowners after several electrical circuits tripped. Photo by Lynn DeYoung.
