Residents in one Spirit Lake apartment complex are still trying to recover from a fatal fire that left dozens homeless on Dec. 7.

A Dec. 3 fire ripped through a Toeterville home. Fire departments from Stacyville, Osage, Lyle and St. Ansgar responded to the call. By the time they arrived, the home was fully engulfed.

The Postville Fire Department was dispatched to 341 Cherry Valley Drive, the Doug Huinker residence, on Wednesday, Nov. 12 just shortly after dinner. Upon the fire department’s arrival, the three-car garage was totally ablaze, with some gusty winds feeding the flames. The fire was suppressed in approximately 25 minutes.

On Dec. 13, ice water rescue training was held in Battle Creek at the Crawford Creek Recreational Area. Battle Creek Fire Department hosted their mutual aid partner Ida Grove for a great training session. Battle Creek and Ida Grove have an automatic call in the event of ice water emergencies.
